The Lido reopens its doors and becomes the Lido2Paris

“What’s the use of sitting/Alone in your room?” / Come and listen to the music / Life is a cabaret”, sang Liza Minnelli in “Cabaret” in 1972. What better way for this new season of the Lido than this song, and this musical, to restart the machine? After years of scarcity and a Covid period which had the effect of a bomb in the performing arts industry, we thought we would never see the famous Parisian institution recover. That was without counting its takeover last year by the Accor hotel group: goodbye Lido, hello Lido2Paris!

Exit the feathers, boas and garter belts, the establishment of the Champs-Elysées version 2022 is counting on a popular musical comedy, chosen by its new director Jean-Luc Choplin and directed by the Canadian Robert Carsen. It’s “Cabaret”, no doubt the musical the best known in Europe, which the former director of the Théâtre du Châtelet et de Marigny decided to produce to open his season. The story relates the life of a Berlin cabaret in the 1930s, and the budding love between a singer and a young student, against a backdrop of the rise of Nazism. So as not to suffer from the comparison with the film directed by Bob Fosse with Liza Minnelli in the main role in 1972, this Lido 2.0 took hold of the original 1966 production to create its modernized version, entirely in English.

A daring choice, in a place that is struggling to bring in French audiences. Despite a very strong desire for modernization, the Lido relies on its strengths and the traditions that have always made it successful, such as the emblematic pedestal tables and the ubiquitous carpet (now dyed red). Jean-Luc Choplin’s objective? Make this mythical place a “Broadway in Paris” he promised our colleagues from “Le Monde”, on November 26th. To do this and for his first creation, the almost 73-year-old artistic director relied on established artists from England. In the main roles, Lisa Connolly plays Sally Bowles and Sam Buttery the cabaret master. Scheduled from Tuesday to Sunday until February 2023, “Cabaret” should ensure a future all in rhinestones and glitter for the institution. For the future? Several months of work to give this new Lido a new, more modern color.
